Beasts of the Southern Wild tells the story of Hushpuppy, an intrepid six-year-old girl who lives with her father, Wink, in “the Bathtub,” a Southern Delta community at the edge of the world. Wink’s tough love prepares her for the unraveling of the universe, for a time when he’s no longer there to protect her. When Wink contracts a mysterious illness, Hushpuppy goes in search of her lost mother.
Drawing on the wealth of Spanish speakers in the Roaring Fork Valley, the museum is collaborating with KPVW La Tricolor to present an afternoon of activities for all ages, entirely in Spanish. Featuring guided tours, family art-making activities, music, and food, this special event is offered free and open to the public en Español.
Held once a month from 10:30–11:30 a.m., these free community workshops provide playful exploration of storytelling for young audiences with their parents or caregivers. A special June session will be held with Active Art participants. This level of Art Studio is offered free of charge and is first come, first served.
Join Heidi Zuckerman, AAM Nancy and Bob Magoon CEO and Director, for a tour through the exhibition Second Chances. Zuckerman will provide insight into the curatorial framework of the exhibition through her own perspective as well as those explored in the works of the various artists on view.
All ages are invited to meet Lizi Boyd, author/illustrator of Flashlight, as she provides a presentation of her studio process as well as a reading and signing of her book. This free program encourages budding youth and adult bookmakers alike to explore storytelling.
AAM Members are invited to stay on to create their own flashlight-inspired collages with Lizi Boyd.
Free, drop-in spotlight tours led by museum staff are offered every Wednesday and Saturdays at 1 p.m.
Have you ever taken a picture of a picture? In this Workshop, where photography mixes with a game of show-and-tell, we’ll use our cameras to snap our most prized possessions such as toys, books, posters, and even music to create new works of art that document who we are, what we like, and what’s cool!
Give new life to forgotten objects and transform the everyday into beautiful works of art! In this Workshop, students will create unique sculptures and mixed media works by giving recycled materials a second chance.
Free, drop-in spotlight tours led by museum staff are offered every Wednesday and Saturday at 1 p.m.
Monthly drop-in Family Workshops at the AAM are designed to provide children and adults free opportunities to explore the galleries and create works of art on their own. Participants get to know one another better through engagement with new artists and ideas. Families are encouraged to communicate, reflect, and produce as artists together.
