Thomas Struth was born in Geldern, Germany, in 1954, and lives and works in Berlin and New York. He is noted for his innovations in large-scale color photography that explore cityscapes, architecture, landscapes, and other environments. Solo presentations of his work have been hosted at the High Museum, Atlanta, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museu Serralves, Porto, Kunsthaus Zürich, Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, and Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.

His language-based sculptures, installations, and ephemeral works explore a radical redefinition of the relationship between the artwork and the viewer. His work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at institutions including the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, Kunsthaus Bregenz, Stedelijk Museum, Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona, Haus der Kunst, Munich, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, Museo Tamayo, Mexico City, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC.
