The Japanese artist Takashi Murakami combines highly refined classical Japanese painting techniques with distinctive Pop sensibilities. Known for his “Superflat” style, directly influenced by manga and anime, the artist creates works that explode with color and playfulness. For the 2015–16 ski season, in collaboration with Aspen Skiing Company, Murakami has produced four unique images, all of which embody his trademark visual aesthetic.
Have fun playing with textures in this zany Workshop! Inspired by the bold surfaces of Chris Ofili’s artworks, you will be encouraged to experiment with a multitude of wacky tactile materials to make one-of-a-kind pieces of art. This half-day Workshop finishes up with an end-of-the-week art show that is sure to impress!

Thomas Struth was born in Geldern, Germany, in 1954, and lives and works in Berlin and New York. He is noted for his innovations in large-scale color photography that explore cityscapes, architecture, landscapes, and other environments. Solo presentations of his work have been hosted at the High Museum, Atlanta, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museu Serralves, Porto, Kunsthaus Zürich, Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, and Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.

Lawrence Weiner was born in the Bronx, New York, in 1942, and lives and works in New York. His language-based sculptures, installations, and ephemeral works explore a radical redefinition of the relationship between the artwork and the viewer. Experiment with “popular opposites,” using contrast as a catalyst for art and design in this zany Workshop. Unlikely combinations collide on a variety of surfaces, creating unexpected mixed media works. We will show off our compositions at an art show for family and friends at the end of the week.
Let’s build! Using a variety of techniques and materials, we will discover the magic of model making by creating mockups and fabricating and replicating our own reproductions of large-scale buildings, items, and art. Through our compacted designs, we’ll learn about the complexities and focus needed to become a pro model maker.
