Active Art invites seniors to engage in the social dimensions of art. Museum educators bring free, memory-enhancing activities to the assisted living communities of Whitcomb Terrace in Aspen and Heritage Park in Carbondale. Physically independent seniors are invited for monthly gatherings at the Aspen Art Museum, where drawing activities and free food and refreshments are offered at SO, the AAM’s Andrea and James Gordon Café.
“Art, as a process, might teach one to care in a different way and to see.” This free roundtable event takes cue from John Outterbridge’s quote, reflecting his overlapping roles as an artist, educator, and activist. Local artists and art educators are invited to participate in a conversation and hands-on exploration of the role art plays in the public realm. Joined by Jamillah James, Curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and Assistant Curator of John Outterbridge: Rag Man, together we will explore the possibility of an exhibition to create change in our community.
Free, drop-in spotlight tours led by museum staff are offered every Wednesday and Saturday at 1 p.m.

The curriculum of this four-session course is built around Sarah Thornton’s newest book, 33 Artists in 3 Acts. Michelle Dezember, AAM Learning Director, will teach the first three sessions, taking cue from the book’s chapter titles and artist case studies. Thornton will lead the final session, humanizing and demystifying contemporary art. Thornton is the former chief correspondent on contemporary art for the Economist and author of the best-seller Seven Days in the Art World.
Participants are strongly encouraged to preregister and purchase a copy of 33 Artists in 3 Acts, available in the AAM Shop.
