Pope L. Artist Takeover in the Aspen Times

Pope.L (b.1955, Newark, NJ) is a Chicago-based visual and performance-theater artist and educator who makes culture out of contraries. For his Aspen Times Artist Takeover, the artist has produced a collective portrait of contemporary Aspen by collaborating with local artists and residents on a set of sixteen text-based self-portraits. Four portraits are shared with the community per week over the course of four weeks (August 21–September 11, 2020), with each portrait sitter responding to the prompt, “At this moment, what is in your mind now?” The artist has stated, “This moment, our now, is scary. No doubt. And we avoid, treat each other like strangers to deal with it. But what else are we avoiding?”

Pope.L’s recent solo exhibitions include member: Pope.L 1978–2001 (2019) at the Museum of Modern Art, Choir at the Whitney Museum of American Art (2019–20), and Conquest (2019) with Public Art Fund in New York.
