Lawrence Weiner

Lawrence Weiner is a pivotal founding figure in the Conceptual art movement. Born in New York in 1942, Weiner was one of the first to “dematerialize” the art object into the medium of ideas and words. His pioneering practice employs everyday materials with real-world context to explore the visual and spatial qualities of language. His Statement of Intent (1969) continues to be a guiding principle for his work:
1. The artist may construct the piece.
2. The piece may be fabricated.
3. The piece need not be built.
Weiner’s instructions for “removals” of portions of gallery or museum walls are among his best-known works. His piece 36 x 36 removal to the lathing or support wall of a plaster or wallboard from a wall (1968) was part of the AAM’s 2008 group exhibition Now You See It, which featured works by artists that encouraged re-examinations beyond formal concerns or material construction. Since the 1970s, Weiner has become best known for wall “sculptures” made using paint and vinyl that often move beyond gallery walls into the city streets. The works present provocative texts that remain open to interpretation, exploring structure and translation at their core. For over thirty-five years, Weiner has continued to use language as a sculptural material emphasizing the relationship between human beings and objects.
Lawrence Weiner lives and works in New York. His solo exhibitions include Kunsthaus Bregenz, Austria (2016); Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire, UK (2015); Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (2014); Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (2013); Haus der Kunst, Munich (2007); Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2007); Museo Tamayo Arte Contemporaneo, Mexico City (2004); Walker Art Center, Minneapolis (1994); and Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC (1990); among others. He participated in Documenta 5, 6, 7, and 13 (1972, 1977, 1982, 2012), the 36th, 41st, 50th, and 55th Venice Biennales (1972, 1984, 2003, 2013), and the 27th São Paulo Biennial (2006). Among the many honors he has been awarded are fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts (1976, 1983), a Guggenheim Fellowship (1994), a Skowhegan Medal for Painting/Conceptual Art (1999), and an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from the Graduate Center, City University of New York (2013). He will be presented with the AAM’s Aspen Award for Art at our annual ArtCrush gala on August 4, 2017.

On Monday, July 17, AAM Nancy and Bob Magoon CEO and Director, Heidi Zuckerman, and Samuel Bernal, Vice President of Integrated Marketing Solutions and AAM community partner at Spanish-language radio station La Tricolor Radio Aspen, accepted the National Medal for Museum and Library Service during a ceremony at the National Archives in Washington, DC. The AAM was selected as one of ten national recipients of the award, presented annually by the Institute of Museum and Library Services as the highest recognition given by the US government to museums and libraries for services to their individual communities. The AAM’s recognition arose from collaboration between the museum and La Tricolor to engage with the Hispanic community and its listeners via the highly successful collaborative programming effort, Arte en Español.
