June 4–8, 9 AM–3 PM
Location: AAM Education Workshop

Create vibrant works of art in this mixed-media workshop inspired by the rainbow! We will explore the magic of the visible spectrum to learn how our eyes see color. Then we’ll create an array of brightly colored artworks using traditional and nontraditional materials, including construction paper, wallpaper, and candy.

Mad Potters
June 11–22, 9 AM–3 PM
Location: AAM Education Workshop
$520 Members/$650 Nonmembers

Shape your future in this two-week pottery workshop designed for young clay artists interested in learning hand-building skills and making friendships that will last a lifetime. We’ll work individually and collaboratively to imagine and create a personal set of functional and decorative pieces. We’ll show off our wares to family and friends at a zany Mad Potters party at the end of the session.

Hey, don’t throw that out! Participants in this mixed-media workshop will gather and transform a variety of found objects and soft materials into spectacular one-of-a-kind collections, textiles, and sculptures, offering both artists and viewers an opportunity to see the environment differently.

Go vertical in this playful sculpture workshop focusing on stacking, balancing, and stability. We’ll use familiar objects to make colorful columns and textured totems that defy gravity, revealing a jaw-dropping exhibition for family and friends at the end of the week.

Location: Treehouse Kids Adventure Center, Snowmass

Lace up your hiking boots and buckle your backpack in this high-alpine, action-painting workshop. Using paint, pastels, and found objects, we’ll paint in response to our surroundings, creating expressive abstract works of art that capture our feelings of the mountains in the moment.

Things aren’t always what they seem! Discovering how the human eye sees color will lead to an array of artworks in this hands-on lab. We’ll explore the visible spectrum, reflection, refraction, and create some mind-bending optical illusions, giving us new insights into art through science.

Fashion Freestyle
July 16–20, 9 AM–3 PM
Location: Aspen High School
$260 Members/$325 Nonmembers

Using contemporary paintings of plaids and patterns created by artist and designer Cheryl Donegan as our muse, we’ll cut, layer, and assemble a colorful medley of fabrics to make new artworks on canvas and a wearable item that expresses our individual tastes with a flair for the freeform. We’ll unveil our designs for family and friends at the end of the session.

Below the earth, Aspen’s rocks, minerals, soil, fossils, and crystals are waiting to be discovered! Daily observations and digs will provide the material for colorful charts, maps, and textiles that collectively tell a visual story of our local history. An installation of objects and artworks will be on display at the end of the session.

Collaboration Stations

Many heads are better than one in this highly collaborative workshop where kids will problem solve and build temporary site-responsive artworks for public use. Documentation of our process will be shared with family and friends at the end of the week.

ARTrageous Sculptures
August 6–10, 9 AM–3 PM
Location: AAM Education Workshop
$240 Members/$300 Nonmembers

Experiment with size and scale in this outrageous workshop for young sculptors. From the minuscule to larger-than-life, students will build flamboyant structures using a variety of surprising materials. Each day’s sculpture will expand on the previous, resulting in a unique new body of work.

Monochrome Mania
August 6–10, 9 AM–3 PM
Location: AAM Education Workshop
$240 Members/$300 Nonmembers

Boo hoo, only one hue? On the contrary! Find out how exciting painting with just one color can be. We’ll learn how to mix unlimited tints, tones, and shades, and experiment with value and the gray scale, too, using graphite and charcoal, creating a frenzy of visually cohesive and expressive monochromatic abstractions.

Aperture Lab

August 13–17, 9 AM–3 PM
Location: AAM Education Workshop
$240 Members/$300 Nonmembers

Capture one-of-a-kind images in this alternative photography workshop inspired by experimental twentieth-century and contemporary photographers. Over the session, we’ll build a pinhole camera, learn how to create photograms, and make prints using a darkroom enlarger.



Time and Location

Unless otherwise noted, most Workshops run from Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., in the AAM Education Workshop.

Tuition

Unless otherwise noted, tuition for a full-week Workshop is $240 for members, $300 for nonmembers. All tuition costs include a $50 nonrefundable registration fee.

In order to be confirmed for a Workshop, an Emergency Contact and Release form must be completed and signed. Payment covers Workshop costs and materials; participants need to bring any snacks and lunch to the Workshop.

Waiting List

There is no charge to be placed on a waiting list for a Workshop that has reached maximum capacity. If a space becomes available, the AAM Education Coordinator will contact the first individual on the waiting list in the order of their application and give twenty-four hours for them to officially register before moving on to the next person on the list.

Cancellation Policy

Thirty days prior written notice is required to receive a refund on Workshop registration costs. No refunds will be issued for cancellations made within thirty days of the start of the Workshop. Please note that tuition includes a $50 registration fee that is nonrefundable. If the AAM is required to cancel the Workshop, the Education Coordinator will contact each participant individually and fully refund the registration cost or reallocate the enrollment to another Workshop. Workshop registrations cannot be transferred to another person.

Art Educators in Training Internship for Teens

This exciting internship and career-building opportunity is for highly motivated high school students who are interested in the arts and demonstrate a love for working with children. Through direct experience teaching in a workshop format, Art Educators in Training build outstanding leadership and communication skills. Click here for more information.

The Aspen Art Museum is pleased to offer need-based scholarships for children and residents of the Roaring Fork Valley. A scholarship application is available for download here.
