José began his career in the world of journalism, but after venturing into Mexico’s Lacandon Jungle for a photographic project to record cultural contamination, found his life changed forever. Find out how his own business building a mezcal brand led to him becoming an artist now specializing in linocut.

About the Artist:

After studying Communication and Journalism at Mexico City’s National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), our AAM June guest artist José Lopez ventured out to create a photographic project that changed his life: recording the cultural contamination of the Lacandon Jungle. This adventure led him to what would become his second home, San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas, where he quickly integrated himself into the San Cristobal cultural wave through work as both a broadcast journalist on public radio and writer for the local media.

Returning again to Mexico City, Lopez worked for a time as a bank clerk, a position which enabled him to return to Chiapas City with additional resources and to take up residence for fifteen years to explore—through his own business venture—the world of producing mezcal. The universe this enterprise provided also introduced him to the incredible places and people who prompted his work in the graphic arts, which he also debuted in his memorable creation of the mezcal brand “Los Amorosos"—one that is retained within the mezcal culture of the city.

Now based between Mexico City, Torreón, and San Cristóbal, Lopez’s graphic work continues to evolve through his own personal projects, among which stand out the #mexicana herbolaria, # Oficiosenextinción and of course the #graficamezcalera, wherein symbolism and flora and fauna converge with the various characters from the fantastical world of rural Mexico and their spirits, and among which the wisdom of mezcal stands out.

José inició su carrera como periodista, pero poco después se aventuró en un proyecto fotográfico para grabar la contaminación cultural en la Selva Lacandona y su vida cambió para siempre. Descubre cómo su negocio en el mezcal lo llevó a convertirse en un artista especializado en linóleo.

Sobre el artista:

Después de estudiar Comunicación y Periodismo en la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) se aventuró en un proyecto fotográfico que le cambió la vida: registrar la contaminación cultural en la Selva Lacandona. Esta aventura lo llevó por primera vez al que resultaría su segundo hogar: San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas. En esta etapa hizo Radio Pública y escribió para medios locales integrándose rápidamente en la ola cultural sancristobalense.

Regresó a la Ciudad de México para trabajar como “oficinista bancario” y entonces poder volver con algunos recursos a la ciudad chiapaneca en la que viviría por 15 años, explorando—con un negocio propio—el maravilloso mundo del mezcal: universo que le presentó lugares y personas increíbles y que impulsó la necesidad de comenzar su obra gráfica, debutante en la etiqueta del mezcal “Los Amorosos” que se mantiene en la memoria y cultura mezcalera de la ciudad.

Hoy en día, José está basado entre Ciudad de México, Torreón y San Cristóbal. Su obra gráfica sigue evolucionando dentro de carpetas personales entre las que destacan la #herbolariamexicana, #oficiosenextinción y por supuesto la #graficamezcalera en donde convergen el simbolismo, la flora, la fauna y los diversos personajes del fantástico mundo del México rural y sus aguardientes, entre los que despunta la sabiduría del mezcal.
