Join us on the AAM rooftop on Saturday, October 10 at 7 p.m. for a second limited-attendance evening screening of award-winning documentary filmmaker Dennis Scholl’s film Lifeline—a portrait of American painter Clyfford Still—followed by a Q&A with Scholl.
Directed and produced by Scholl in collaboration with Denver’s Clyfford Still Museum (CSM), the 77-minute Lifeline is a documentary look at a painter recognized by his peers as an important artistic leader. Fiercely independent, irascible, and iconic, Clyfford Still was a forefather of the abstract expressionist movement and spokesman for the group of so-called “color field” painters that included Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman, and Ad Reinhardt. In 1951, at the height of his success, he famously withdrew his work from public exhibition and until his death in 1980, refused to exhibit, sell, or loan any of his paintings.
Lifeline features reflections on his life and work by Still’s surviving daughters, acclaimed contemporary artists Mark Bradford, Julie Mehretu, and Julian Schnabel, as well as SFMOMA director Neal Benezra, Clyfford Still Museum director (former Aspen Art Museum director) Dean Sobel, award-winning architect Brad Cloepfil, Colorado governor John Hickenlooper, art historian David Anfam, and art critic Jerry Saltz.
