Position Title: Installation Crew/Art Preparators
Reports to: Installation Director

General Purpose Statement

Installation Crew/Art Preparators work under the direction and supervision of the Installation Director to conduct the installation and de-installation of all exhibitions, museum preparation, repairs in conjunction with exhibitions and events, and general maintenance of the museum’s galleries and storage.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Preparing museum or off-site exhibition spaces for exhibitions including light construction, painting, and work on lighting and AV systems
  • Unpacking and precise installation of valuable works of art
  • De-installing and crating works of art in various mediums
  • Cleaning of gallery spaces
  • General maintenance of museum exhibition spaces and storage areas
  • May drive truck in local area to move artwork and art installation supplies and materials
  • Packing artworks safely for storage, shipping, or off-site deliveries
  • Moving artworks of various weights and dimensions throughout the gallery or to and from delivery trucks

  • Ability to quickly problem solve during complex, multipart, multimedia installations

  • Ability to work indoors or outdoors, weekdays and weekends, early mornings and evenings when required

  • Basic knowledge of installation/hanging devices and hardware
  • Knowledge of various materials and art handling techniques
  • Ability to understand and comply with written policies and follow standard operating procedures
  • Ability to exercise excellent judgment by carrying out established policies and procedures for security and safety of people, artwork, and museum facilities
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective, tactful, and courteous working relationships with fellow employees, artists, and the general public

Requirements and Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate or bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Art handling experience in a museum or gallery setting
  • Experience with a variety of hand and power tools, measuring devices, levels, and carpentry skills preferred
  • Knowledge and enthusiasm for contemporary visual art, artists, museums, and exhibitions a plus
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record required to drive the truck to move artwork

  • Must exhibit an ability to pay extreme attention to detail
  • Physically able to lift and safely move artworks weighing up to 75lbs and of varied dimensions with assistance
  • May occasionally be required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and to lift and move between thirty to fifty pounds without assistance
  • Required to stand for long periods; use hands and arms to reach, hold, lift, and move objects
  • Knowledge of artwork security and safety practices in a business environment
  • Ability to anticipate, intervene, and prevent potentially harmful circumstances while handling artwork
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, product information manuals, and instructions
  • Attention to detail and the ability to stay alert
  • Ability to work on your feet for up to eight–ten hours at a time during install and de-install activity
  • Ability to talk and hear effectively
  • Work is mostly indoors, but will also require outdoor exposure when loading or unloading trucks and while assisting with off-site exhibitions and events
  • Requires ability to navigate in small, tight areas or confined storage spaces
  • Appropriate staff dress is required at all times
Hours and Work Schedule

This position does not have regular hours, but works as part of a team on installations and events as needed. This is an hourly position requiring flexible availability that will vary with workload. The position is nonexempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act and will receive overtime pay for all hours worked in excess of forty hours in a seven-day workweek or over twelve hours in a day.
