Curatorial Intern

The Aspen Art Museum is an accredited, globally preeminent, non-collecting museum that organizes and presents the newest, most important evolutions in global contemporary art through a dynamic exhibition program of sixteen to eighteen shows per year. With an annual operating budget of $7 million and a team of over seventy professional staff members, the AAM is situated in an iconic building in a picturesque environment with an exceptionally active community of contemporary art collectors. Internship Description

The AAM Curatorial Intern is responsible for assisting with the implementation of curatorial research and maintaining the AAM Archive. An ideal intern is interested in contemporary art, art history, and/or curatorial studies. The schedule is flexible: typically 20–30 hours per week between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., with occasional evenings and weekends. The Curatorial and Archive Internship will begin in May and last for a minimum of eight weeks—possibility to extend time frame based on intern availability.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conduct research on upcoming exhibitions, including site-specific research, artist biographies, compiling a bibliography and related resources
  • Organize administrative and logistical tasks related to exhibition preparation
  • Develop information associated with exhibition checklists, press releases, gallery guides, and other print and digital copy
  • Prepare reports and briefs on exhibitions, artists, and/or artworks
  • Prepare correspondences
  • File and organize digital and physical files related to exhibitions and artists
  • Organize AAM Archive materials in both the physical archive space and through creating database entries in the AAM Archive database
Requirements and Qualifications
  • Desire to learn more about working in a museum in the curatorial department
  • Knowledge of contemporary art and art history, including completion of upper-level undergraduate studies
  • Ability to read, understand, and complete written and verbal requests and work assignments
  • Excellent communication skills, verbal and written
  • Strong organizational skills
  • The ability to multitask in a fast-paced setting
  • Ability to work calmly and enthusiastically under high pressure
  • Keen attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Ability to represent the museum with a high level of integrity and professionalism, adhere to museum policies, maintain confidentiality, and support management decisions in a positive, professional manner

  • Flexible, highly responsible, articulate, self-motivated
  • Proficiency in standard computer applications and programs, e.g., MS Word, email, MS Excel, Photoshop, and file management
  • Ability to classify, record, and compile archived information into a data system
  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds
