Chief Financial Officer

General Purpose Statement

Mission: The Aspen Art Museum is a non-collecting institution presenting the newest, most important evolutions in international contemporary art. Our innovative and timely exhibitions, education and public programs, immersive activities, and community happenings actively engage audiences in thought-provoking experiences of art, culture, and society.

The Chief Financial Officer sets policy and provides financial direction for the Aspen Art Museum ensuring financial compliance, sustainability and oversight. Primary duties include developing and maintaining internal accounting and controls, financial recording and reporting functions, producing annual, monthly and ad hoc reports, developing the annual budget and performing extensive financial analysis. The CFO reports directly to the CEO, serves as a key member of the executive leadership team and oversees staff in finance, administration, human resources, information technology, shop and café operations

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with CEO to develop and implement institutional strategies and manage oversight of performance across museum departments.
  • Prepare, analyze and present timely and accurate financial reports.
  • Develop the institution’s short- and long-term strategies on financial performance.
  • Manage and execute the daily operations of the Museum’s Finance Department including General Ledger, Accounts Payable, Payroll and Cash disbursements.
  • Manage the Café and Shop retail operations.
  • Hire, supervise and evaluate performance of finance, administration, human resources, café and shop staff.
  • Maintain the accuracy and integrity of the financial systems.
  • Maintaining accounting control over the Museum’s restricted, board-designated, and endowment funds.
  • Direct and coordinate annual museum budget preparation as well as interim and project budgets for grants.
  • Interface with management to ensure compliance with established budgets, forecast budget variances and develop long-range financial plans.
  • Monitor and anticipate cash flow requirements and investment activities.
  • Liaison with key Board committees, providing information, reports and recommendations.
  • Prepare a variety of management information reports as requested by the Senior Staff and Board.
  • Coordinate the annual audit and issuance of annual financial statements.
  • Manage the preparation of federal and state required filings and related reports to ensure compliance reporting requirements.
  • Submit bi-weekly and semi-monthly payrolls and ensure accuracy of all payroll information
  • Administer employee compensation and benefits.
  • Identify and mitigate institutional risk by maintaining adequate insurance coverage and administering contractual relationships.
  • Oversight of information technology systems.

  • Knowledge and enthusiasm for contemporary visual art, artists, museums and exhibitions.
  • Computer skills to complete forms and paperwork and to use email.
  • Ability to read, understand, and complete written and verbal requests and work assignments.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, working both independently and as a team member.
  • Outstanding writing, editing, organizational, management, supervisory, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work with close attention to detail and to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to take initiative and prioritize tasks; excellent time-management, problem-prevention, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to represent the museum with a high level of integrity and professionalism, adhere to museum policies, and support management decisions in a positive, professional manner.
  • Knowledge of security operations, safety practices in a business environment, and enforcement procedures.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings, weekends, and some holidays.
  • Ability to work positively with colleagues, artists, the public, Board of Trustees, donors, and volunteers.
Requirements and Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting and CPA required.
  • Minimum of seven years experience in nonprofit administration and two years fund accounting experience.
  • Experience with Financial Edge is desirable.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with staff, trustees, and volunteers.
Mental and Physical Abilities
  • The ability to work extended hours during a mentally and physically demanding events schedule while remaining flexible, calm, positive, and professional.
  • The ability to lift over thirty to fifty pounds and be on your feet for at least four to eight hours or more continuously.
  • Ability to sit at a computer station for at least four to eight hours or more continuously.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with and resolve problems while remaining flexible.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to work positively with colleagues, artists, the public, Board of Trustees, donors, and volunteers.
  • Must be service-oriented and adaptable to change.
  • Required to sit and or stand for long periods; use hands and arms to enter data on a computer keyboard, reach, hold, lift, and move objects; talk and hear to effectively serve patrons; and to lift and carry heavy service trays and other items.
  • May occasionally be required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and to lift and move between thirty to fifty pounds without assistance.
  • Work is mostly indoors but will also require outdoor exposure when the Café glass curtain is open to the Sculpture Garden and while assisting with off-site events.
  • Appropriate staff dress is required at all times.
Hours and Work Schedule

This is a salaried position that generally requires availability Monday through Friday with an occasional weekend, evening, and holiday work. The Chief Financial Officer position is exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act and does not receive overtime pay for hours worked in excess of forty in a seven-day work week.
