Sam Falls

Dec 15, 2017-May 13, 2018

Los Angeles–based artist Sam Falls is celebrated for his combination of photography, painting, and sculpture. Heavily invested in process, Falls experiments with light, space, time, and the affect of natural processes on material. Through this exploration, he constantly pushes the medium he identifies with best—photography—beyond the limitations of the camera.

Commissioned by Public Art Fund in New York, Falls’s large-scale experiential Untitled (Wind Chimes) (2014) draws attention to the passage of time and our engagement with objects around us. The piece is too weighted to rely on a spontaneous outdoor breeze for its movement and sounds, but visitors are encouraged to interact with it using their bodily strength. Like much of Falls’s work, Untitled (Wind Chimes) further investigates natural progressions of deterioration and reveals new colors beneath the surface when played over time.

AAM exhibitions are made possible by the Marx Exhibition Fund. General exhibition support is provided by the Toby Devan Lewis Visiting Artist Fund.
