José began his career in the world of journalism, but after venturing into Mexico’s Lacandon Jungle for a photographic project to record cultural contamination, found his life changed forever. Find out how his own business building a mezcal brand led to him becoming an artist now specializing in linocut.

José inició su carrera como periodista, pero poco después se aventuró en un proyecto fotográfico para grabar la contaminación cultural en la Selva Lacandona y su vida cambió para siempre. Descubre cómo su negocio en el mezcal lo llevó a convertirse en un artista especializado en linóleo.

    • In order to create a successful design to transfer onto a linoleum block, we need to think about patterns! Join AAM Educator Vanessa Porras today at 2:30 p.m. (MT) on instagram to learn about basic drawing techniques, line work, and pattern. Inspired by our June guest artist José Lopez’s work with agave plants, you’ll experiment by drawing different cacti and succulents.

Acompaña a la educadora de AAM, Vanessa Porras, hoy a las 2:30 pm MT para aprender sobre técnicas básicas de dibujo, líneas y patrones. Inspirado por el trabajo de José López con agaves, experimentarás dibujando diferentes cactus y suculentas.

      DisAbility Film Festival
      An in person film festival presented in partnership with Western Colorado University’s Communication Arts/Film and Education Departments.

      Opening remarks will be presented by Dr. Tara Mason, Assistant Professor of Inclusive Education, and Jack Lucido, Professor of Communication Arts, Director of Film Studies and Chair of CALL Department.

      About the DisAbility Film Festival:
      Our mission is to raise awareness of the triumphs within inclusive education. We believe there are issues related to social justice & lack of educational opportunity for students served in special education. We want to explore creative pedagogy that serves students within inclusive classroom environments using film as a launchpad for discussion, advocacy and change in special education.

      Summer Workshops

      PreK children (ages 4 – 5 years) are invited to join us at the AAM for a week of creating art and making music! The AAM and Aspen Music Festival and School will be collaborating to provide kids with the chance to make their own instruments and design their own performance for a celebration at the end of the week.

    • When creating a linocut, the size of your gouges matter! Join AAM Educator Vanessa Porras today at 2:30 p.m. (MT) for a demo on making different gouge sizes and the different patterns and textures one can achieve through use of cutting tools. We’ll also be taking a close look at artist José Lopez ‘s prints to learn about the various carving techniques he uses to create dimension.

Acompaña a la educadora de AAM, Vanessa Porras, hoy a las 2:30 pm MT para una demostración sobre diferentes tamaños de gubia y los diferentes patrones y texturas que puedes lograr. Observarás de cerca los grabados de José López y aprenderás sobre las diversas técnicas de tallado que usa para crear dimensión.

      Sunday Workshop

      The AAM welcomes the community to participate in an art-making workshop hosted on Level 3! Planned in collaboration with the museum’s Access Community Advisory Council, this workshop will focus on forms of expression and include art making activities for all ages. Gallery tours will be offered in American Sign Language, English, and Spanish.

      Join us two times per month on Level 3 at the AAM for art-making activities with a view!
