      Family Workshop

Monthly drop-in Family Workshops at the AAM are designed to provide children and adults free opportunities to explore the galleries and create works of art on their own. Participants get to know one another better through engagement with exhibitions. Families are encouraged to communicate, reflect, and produce as artists together.

    • Uncover the treasures of creative experimentation! Taking inspiration from Liz Larner’s mixed media works, participants will explore an array of materials and techniques to create one-of-a-kind multimedia and dynamic ceramic pieces over the course of the Workshop.

    • Design your own series of soft sculptures using your favorite colors and fabrics in this tactile Workshop inspired by Judith Scott. Starting with a no-sew approach, students will develop handy skills to create an assortment of new plushy objects and friends. Also, acquiring sewing skills will further encourage students to explore combinations of color and pattern.

    • What do kids and water have in common? Find out in this wet and wild Workshop where splishing, splashing, science, and art coexist on the shores of Hallam Lake. Each day, participants will record their scientific discoveries using water-based paints and an array of techniques such as washes, drips, dyes, and resists. Celebrate the journey with friends and family at the end-of-the-week art show and all-camp performance.

    • What can you say with a squiggle? Children will play with different forms of drawing, filling white spaces with curls, twists, wiggles, and loops. Whether by scribbles or squiggles both large and small, layer after layer of these loops and hoops will illuminate unique stories on paper.

    • Experience art outdoors! Taking note from the Lynda Benglis artworks installed in the Roof Deck Sculpture Garden, we’ll create our own unique outdoor sculptures. Inspired by nature and our beautiful surroundings, participants will learn a variety of sculptural techniques using both traditional and nontraditional materials. Creativity and imagination will run wild in the summer sun!
