The Great Debate and Screening: Are Facts Fundamental to Truth?

Oct 17, 2018
5:00 PM
637 E. Hyman Ave

5–6 PM: Debate

The Great Debate is a public program inviting elevated, engaged conversations around questions that unpack our opinions around art and beyond. Following the centuries-old format of the Oxford Union, the proposition “Are Facts Fundamental to Truth?” will be debated by four luminaries—two for and two against. Once the speakers have put forth their arguments, the discussion will open up to the audience for deliberation and a final vote.

Moderator: Alycin Bektesh, News Director, Aspen Public Radio

For the proposition:
1. Brent Gardner-Smith, Editor and Executive Director of Aspen Journalism
2. Curtis Wackerle, Editor of the Aspen Daily News

Against the proposition:
1. Cindy Hircshfeld, Editor in Chief of Aspen Sojourner
2. David Krause, Editor of the Aspen Times

6:30–8:30 PM: Film Screening of All the President’s Men (1976)

Presented in partnership with Aspen Public Radio and Aspen Film, this event will also include a screening of All the President’s Men (1976), the classic film of journalistic fortitude set against the backdrop of the Watergate scandal. Complimentary refreshments will be provided.
