General Purpose Statement

Summer Workshop instructors must have a passion for contemporary art and the ability to spark interest, arouse curiosity, develop and administer educational programs, and encourage others to learn about art using visual literacy and object oriented learning. Weeklong summer workshops are designed for children ages 4–14. Under the guidance of the summer workshop instructor, children develop artistic skills and expand their understanding of contemporary art through fun activities, hands-on projects, performances, exhibition tours, group discussions, and off-site excursions. Workshops culminate in a wrap-up party for friends and family where student’s present works created throughout the week.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Creates and implements detailed lesson plans for a weeklong workshop, guided by AAM exhibitions and workshop theme
  • Identifies, selects, and modifies instructional resources to meet the needs of the students with varying backgrounds, learning styles, and special needs
  • Assists in assessing changing curricular needs and offers plans for improvement
  • Maintains effective and efficient record-keeping and reflections
  • Provides a positive environment in which students are encouraged to be actively engaged in the learning process
  • Ensures that student growth and achievement is continuous and appropriate for age group, subject area, and/or program classification
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative working relationships with students, parents, and schools, as measured by the Aspen Art Museum
  • Maintains a clean workshop environment and ensures the safety and well-being of workshop participants and their environment
  • Mentors Art Educator in Training (AET) intern, overseeing their development and engagement with workshop participants

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of current art exhibitions and educational strategies to parallel exhibitions
  • Knowledge of AAM and department policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of standard computer applications and programs, e.g., MS Office Suite
  • Good working knowledge of art history, especially contemporary art
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as educational curriculum, safety rules, product information manuals, and instructions
  • Ability to understand and follow standard operating procedures
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service and team skills
  • Ability to be a self-starter and motivated during downtimes
  • Ability to have rigorous attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to read, understand, and complete written and verbal requests and work assignments
  • Ability to demonstrate excellent communication skills both orally and in writing
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service and conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to be both friendly and authoritative
  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds
  • Ability to represent the museum with a high level of integrity and professionalism, adhere to museum policies, and support management decisions in a positive, professional manner
  • Visual literacy ability to interpret, use, appreciate, and create images and video using both conventional and twenty-first-century media in ways that advance thinking, decision-making, communication, and learning
  • Dependability, flexibility, and adaptability in a dynamic event-driven environment
Requirements and Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in fine arts, art history, education, or a related field and a minimum of two years of experience working in childhood education, or any other combination of experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
  • Candidate must possess strong writing, teaching, organizational, customer service, and communication skills.
  • Prefer CPR/First Aid certification or must have ability to obtain prior to instructing.
  • A satisfactory motor vehicle record and background check is required.
Mental and Physical Abilities, Work Environment
  • Ability to lift 25lbs and move bulky objects
  • May require a lot of work on feet, moving of light furniture, and bending
  • Comfortable reading or doing a demonstration in front of large audiences
  • Clear diction and adequate hearing are necessary for effective communication with coworkers and the public
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle
  • Ability to stoop and kneel are necessary for performing required work
  • Exposure to extreme conditions such as heat, wet, dry, various odors, fumes, smoke, noise, vibrations, dust, or intense light when performing job duties
  • Ability to stand for a long periods of time
  • Work is generally performed inside in a climate-controlled environment with light background noise

Hours and Work Schedule

This is an at will summer seasonal part-time position. The compensation for this summer seasonal position is paid on a flat rate per class for each workshop which consists of typically a M-F schedule from 8 am-4 pm, requiring availability for varying schedules. The Summer Workshop schedule is segmented into weekly classes in which the instructor will be compensated with a weekly flat rate for each class taught. The Summer Workshop Instructor position is exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act and will not receive overtime pay for hours worked in excess of forty hours in a seven-day workweek or over twelve hours daily.
