Shop Associate, Part Time

Reports to: Retail Manager

General Purpose Statement

The Museum Shop Associate is responsible for the daily operation of the Aspen Art Museum Shop, which includes generating sales, visual merchandising, cash handling, administration of reports and operations of deposits, inventory control and processing, answering phones, and general customer service.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Generate sales of shop products and elevate guest experience.
  • Process online orders and maintain products for online shop.
  • Execute quarterly cycle counts on each product category and support an annual full-store inventory.
  • Open and close the point-of-sale system at start and end of shift.
  • Count cash, print reports, and organize daily deposit information.
  • Process shop sales in point-of-sale system.
  • Upkeep of shop area including wiping down surfaces, straightening out merchandise, and restocking.
  • Assist with receiving new merchandise, entering into the POS system, ticketing, and display.
  • Must be familiar with and able to discuss the exhibitions, current and upcoming, and familiar with all other museum functions and programs, including public programs, special events, educational programs, etc.
  • Must be familiar with Shop collaborations, artists, vendors, featured exhibitions, etc.
  • Ability to demonstrate professionalism and preserve confidential information.
  • Assist SHOP Assistant Manager with other duties as assigned.


    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of AAM and department policies and procedures
  • Ability to understand and follow standard operating procedures
  • Knowledge of standard computer applications and programs, e.g., MS Office Suite
  • Good working knowledge of art history, especially contemporary art
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, product information manuals, and instructions
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service and team skills
  • Ability to be a self-starter and motivated during down times
  • Ability to have rigorous attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to read, understand, and complete written and verbal requests and work assignments
  • Ability to demonstrate excellent communication skills both orally and in writing
  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds
  • Ability to represent the museum with a high level of integrity and professionalism, adhere to museum policies, and support management decisions in a positive manner
  • Dependability, flexibility, and adaptability in a dynamic event-driven environment
  • Ability to work evenings, days, weekends, and some holidays
  • Ability to pay attention to detail and stay alert for long periods of time in a very quiet environment.


    Requirements and Qualifications

    High school diploma or GED required, with a preference to undergraduate associates degree from an accredited college or university; with preferred one year of previous work experience in a retail sales environment, or guest service experience and any other combination of experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered. Preferred knowledge with retail point-of-sale systems.


    Hours and Work Schedule

    This is an hourly position requiring availability for weekend, day, evening, and holiday shifts. The museum Shop Associate position is nonexempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act and will receive overtime pay for all hours worked in excess of forty hours in a seven-day workweek.
