Facilities Assistant

Reports to: Facilities Director

General Purpose Statement

The Facilities Assistant performs maintenance and repair of the Aspen Art Museum’s facilities and operations equipment, to include plumbing, mechanical, electrical, painting, carpet, flooring, and exterior maintenance. This position will assist and report to the Facilities Director and must have the desire to learn the Facility Manager role to provide full backup of duties to support the AAM. This is a full-time, year-round position.

Duties
  • Performs minor facility repairs such as painting, plumbing, wall patching, spot stain removal, and others
  • Provides preventative maintenance on systems and equipment as scheduled.
  • Procures supplies, tools, and equipment as directed by the Facilities Manager.
  • Completes assigned training on systems and equipment to ensure safe maintenance practices.
  • Makes periodic inspections of systems, equipment and facility and reports findings to Facilities Manager
  • Is available and responds to alarms, emergency situations and down system situations.
  • Delivery and storage of packages and shipments including maintenance supplies, shop inventory, office supplies and printed materials.
  • Performs some custodial tasks including: sweeping and mopping floors, cleaning of windows and walls in accessible areas, snow removal, paint touch-up, emptying trash and supplying restrooms
  • Utilizes a variety of equipment in the maintenance of the facilities, including: man lift, power tools, and other maintenance equipment
  • Maintain all equipment, materials, and supplies necessary to complete maintenance tasks
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Basic knowledge of principles and practices of facility maintenance and safety practices
  • Utilization of appropriate safety equipment while performing duties
  • Desire to learn the Facility Manager role and responsibilities to act as backup when Facility Director is unavailable
  • Knowledge of AAM and department policies and procedures
  • Computer skills to complete forms and paperwork and to use email
  • Skill in the safe and proper use of tools and equipment necessary to perform various maintenance and repair tasks, including man lift, power tools, and other maintenance equipment
  • Ability to read, understand, and complete written and verbal requests and work assignments
  • Ability to read and understand maintenance text to identify repair components and to complete operational tasks
  • Ability to perform on-call duties as assigned
  • Ability to work successfully in a fast-paced team environment
  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds
  • Ability to take initiative and work efficiently to complete tasks with limited supervision
Requirements and Qualifications

High school diploma or GED with at least four years experience in maintenance, carpentry, electrical, or plumbing tasks or any combination of experience and education that provides the required knowledge, skills, and ability may be considered. A valid driver’s license is required

Conditions and Physical Activities Required to Perform Essential Functions
  • Exposure to extreme conditions such as heat, cold, wet, dry, various odors, fumes, smoke, noise, vibrations, dust, or intense light when performing maintenance
  • Handling of chemicals including cleaners, solvents, paints, and other toxic chemicals using appropriate safety gear.
  • Sitting/Standing/Walking: 80% of time is spent standing or moving around the work areas
  • Speaking/Hearing: Clear diction and acute hearing are necessary for effective communication with vendors, contractors, and coworkers
  • Vision: Corrected vision close to 20/20 is necessary to effectively perform assigned custodial duties
  • Lifting/Carrying: Ability to lift and carry up to fifty pounds when using cleaning equipment and supplies
  • Climbing/Balancing: Ability to climb and maintain balance when working on ladders
  • Stooping/Kneeling/Crouching: Ability to stoop, kneel, and crouch when performing maintenance operations such as repair and inspection
Hours and Work Schedule

This is an hourly position requiring availability for weekend, evening, and holiday shifts. This position is nonexempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act and will receive overtime pay for all hours worked in excess of forty in a seven-day workweek or over twelve hours in a day.
