Position Title: Senior Educator

Reports to: Learning Director

Department: Education

Employment Status: At Will Part-Time

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

General Purpose Statement

Assist Access and Education Program Manager, Learning Director, and Education Coordinator with the development of lesson plans and facilitation of Aspen Art Museum exhibition-related education programs for youth, adult, and other identified groups.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Exhibition in a Box: a free multi-visit program for all third grade and first grade middle school classes in and around the Roaring Fork Valley. Travel within a 100-mile radius from Aspen will be required
  • Art Studio: weekly afterschool workshops for elementary school students at AAM Summer and Winter Workshops: weeklong workshops for ages 4–14 that incorporate art-making projects, performances, and object-based discussions
  • Family Workshops: monthly drop-in opportunities that provide children and adults access to explore the galleries and create works of art together
  • Artists in the Making: Ten-week afterschool middle school courses hosted at Basalt Middle School and Aspen Middle School, incorporating guest experts, excursions, and a final exhibition.
  • Community programs: Teach monthly programs in libraries, senior centers, Pitkin County Jail, and other community partner locations, incorporating art appreciation and empathy-building
  • Access programs: Onsite and offsite programs for clients of Ascendigo Autism Services and Mountain Valley Developmental Services (in collaboration with Access and Education Program Manager)
  • Winter Workshops: day-long workshops for ages 4–14 that create responses to art on view
  • Rural/100-mile programs: Develop and implement programs for adults and families at community partner locations across Western Slope. Travel and overnight stay will be required
  • Interpretive Materials: Develop questions for discussion and suggested activities for printed materials used by visitors to AAM exhibitions
  • Lead tours and activities for youth, adult, and other community groups that promote visual literacy and critical thinking
  • Identify, select, create, and modify instructional resources to meet the needs of the students with varying backgrounds, learning styles, and special needs
  • Assist in assessing changing curricular needs and offer plans for improvement
  • Attend professional development and training opportunities to stay current in museum best practices
  • Maintain effective and efficient record-keeping procedures
  • Provide a positive environment in which program participants are encouraged to be actively engaged in the learning process
  • Ensure that student growth and achievement is continuous and appropriate for age group, subject area, and/or program classification
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, parents, community groups, and schools, as measured by the Aspen Art Museum
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of current art exhibitions and educational strategies to parallel exhibitions
  • Knowledge of AAM and department policies and procedures
  • Computer skills to complete forms and paperwork and to use email
  • Ability to read, understand, and complete written and verbal requests and work assignments
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service skills and conflict resolution skills

  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as education curriculum, safety rules, product information manuals, and instructions

  • Ability to work with other museum staff to develop and market the museum and the exhibitions and events programed
Requirements and Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in fine arts, art history, education, or a related field and
  • A minimum of three years of experience working in art education preferred.
  • A minimum of two years of experience working with children in an educational environment
  • Candidate must possess strong writing, teaching, organizational, critical thinking, and communication skills.
  • A satisfactory background check is required. Must have a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.

Mental and Physical Abilities, Work Environment
  • Ability to lift 25 lbs. and move bulky objects
  • May require a lot of work on feet, moving of light furniture, and bending
  • Comfortable reading or doing a demonstration in front of large audiences
  • Clear diction and adequate hearing are necessary for effective communication with coworkers and the public
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing
  • Ability to operate motor vehicle.
  • Ability to stoop and kneel are necessary for performing required work
  • Exposure to extreme conditions such as heat, cold, wet, dry, various odors, fumes, smoke, noise, vibrations, dust, or intense light when performing job duties
  • Ability to stand for long periods
  • Work is generally performed inside in a climate-controlled environment with light background noise
Hours and Work Schedule

This is an hourly position requiring availability for weekend, day, evening, and holiday shifts. The Educator position is nonexempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act and will receive overtime pay for all hours worked in excess of forty in a seven-day workweek.
