Position Title: Education Coordinator

Reports to: Learning Director

Department: Education

Employment Status: At Will, Full Time

FLSA Status: Salary, Exempt

General Purpose Statement

The Education Coordinator provides support for the Education Department’s daily operations and the implementation of the museum’s growing education and public programs. This full-time position handles registrations, organizes workshops, coordinates and facilitates tours, responds to general correspondence and requests for information, and assists at programs and events. The position reports to the Learning Director.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Manages all workshop registrations and program RSVPs.
  • Organizes workshop locations, logistics, and supplies.
  • Coordinates school and other organization’s tours of the museum.
  • Facilitates and teaches at tours, workshops, and select outreach programs.
  • Assists in the development of art activities and related materials for exhibitions and programs.
  • Coordinates with curatorial and development departments on events and programming.
  • Assists colleagues with the development of new education programs and materials.
  • Manages recordkeeping for the department and responds to general education inquiries and correspondence.
  • Conducts outreach to schools and community organizations via telephone, email, and personal visits when necessary to encourage the growth and accessibility of museum programming
  • Acts as a liaison to other departments regarding education requirements and inquiries.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of current art exhibitions and educational strategies.
  • Knowledge of AAM and department policies and procedures.
  • Ability to interpret or implement management policies or operating practices.
  • Uses independent judgment and discretion while carrying out assigned duties.
  • Computer skills to complete forms and paperwork and to use email.
  • Ability to read, understand, and complete written and verbal requests and work assignments.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service skills and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to be both friendly and authoritative.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to understand and follow standard operating procedures.
  • Ability to represent the museum with a high level of integrity and professionalism, adhere to museum policies, and support management decisions in a positive, professional manner.
  • Dependability, flexibility, and adaptability in a dynamic event-driven environment.
  • Ability to work days, evenings, weekends, and some holidays.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as education curriculum, safety rules, product information manuals, and instructions.
  • Ability to work positively with colleagues, the public, and volunteers.
  • Ability to work with other museum staff to develop and market the museum and the exhibitions and events programmed.
Requirements and Qualifications
  • BA in art history, fine arts, education, or related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of one year experience teaching art or providing administrative support in a childhood educational environment preferred or equivalent educational experience.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to multitask under pressure in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to represent the museum with a high level of integrity and professionalism, adhere to museum policies, maintain confidentiality, and support management decisions in a positive, professional manner.
  • Working knowledge of art history, especially contemporary art and the international contemporary art world, a plus.
  • Candidate must possess strong writing, teaching, organizational, critical thinking, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • A satisfactory background check is required. Must have a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.
Mental and Physical Abilities, Work Environment
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds and move bulky objects.
  • May require a lot of work on feet, moving of light furniture, and bending.
  • Comfortable reading or doing a demonstration in front of large audiences.
  • Clear diction and adequate hearing are necessary for effective communication with children, coworkers, and the public.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
  • Ability to operate motor vehicle.
  • Ability to stoop and kneel is necessary for performing required work.
  • Exposure to extreme conditions such as heat, cold, wet, dry, various odors, fumes, smoke, noise, vibrations, dust, or intense light when performing job duties.
  • Ability to stand for long periods.
  • Work is generally performed inside in a climate-controlled environment with light to moderate background noise.
Hours and Work Schedule

This is a salaried position requiring availability for weekend, day, evening, and holiday shifts. This position is exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act and will not receive overtime pay for hours worked in excess of forty in a seven-day workweek or over twelve hours per day.
