Café Associate, Part-Time

Reports to: Café Assistant Manager

General Purpose Statement

Provide friendly, efficient, and professional service in the museum café for museum visitors and at special events. Will require training in all three assignments and may be asked to perform duties required by any of the assignments below.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide friendly and efficient service to museum café customers
  • Assist guests with food orders by having complete knowledge of weekly menu
  • May deliver food and beverages and clear tables as needed
  • Maintain clean and organized food service areas
  • Maintain proper hygiene and follow appropriate food-handling procedures
  • Protect the health, safety, and well-being of guests and colleagues at all times
  • Opening and closing duties as assigned
  • Identify, resolve, and report hazards and safety issues
  • Ensure overall guest satisfaction and report complaints and/or concerns as required in accordance with policies and procedures
  • Support special event food service operations by setting up, providing professional service, and cleaning up following functions when required:

a) Floor Assignment

  • Deliver food and beverages to tables
  • Clear tables of dirty dishes, clean tables and chairs, and reset
  • Assist with ware-washing and maintenance of pantry; responsible for ware-washing when kitchen staff not present
  • Assist with restocking kitchen island and kitchen pantry
  • Empty trash and recycling bins as needed; take trash and recycling to trash room

b) Barista Assignment

  • Brew coffee and iced tea prior to service
  • Prepare service area by stocking serving ware, dry goods, and cleaning prior to opening
  • Prepare beverages during daily service
  • Plate all snack items during daily service
  • Assist with ware-washing and maintenance of pantry
  • Assist with restocking kitchen island and kitchen pantry

c) Cashier Assignment

  • Take food and beverage orders
  • Serve guests cold beverages including wine and beer selections
  • Prepare beverages and plate snack items when barista not present
  • Perform accurate cash and credit card transactions in a point-of-sale system
  • Perform opening and closing duties including credit card settlements, daily reporting, and daily deposit as directed
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of AAM and department policies and procedures
  • Computer skills to complete forms and paperwork and to use email
  • Ability to read, understand, and complete written and verbal requests and work assignments
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service and conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to be both friendly and authoritative
  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds
  • Ability to understand and follow standard operating procedures
  • Ability to represent the museum with a high level of integrity and professionalism, adhere to museum policies, and support management decisions in a positive, professional manner
  • Dependability, flexibility, and adaptability in a dynamic event-driven environment
  • Must be able to remain calm in stressful situations and help resolve complaints with tact and courtesy
  • Knowledge of security operations, safety practices in a business environment, and enforcement procedures
  • Ability to anticipate, intervene, and prevent potentially harmful circumstances to artwork
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and some holidays
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, product information manuals, and instructions
  • Attention to detail and the ability to stay alert for long periods of time in a very quiet environment
  • Ability to stand for long periods—up to four hours at a time
  • Ability to work positively with colleagues, artists, the public, Board of Trustees, donors, and volunteers  
Requirements and Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED with at least one year of previous work experience in food service or customer service, or any other combination of experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
  • Preferring a minimum of twenty-one years of age.
Mental and Physical Abilities
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
  • Ability to deal with and resolve problems
  • Effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to work positively with colleagues, artists, the public, Board of Trustees, donors, and volunteers
  • Employee is required to stand for long periods; use hands and arms to reach, hold, lift, and move objects; talk and hear to effectively serve patrons; and to lift and carry heavy service trays and other items
  • May occasionally be required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and to lift and move up to fifty pounds without assistance
  • Work is mostly indoors but will also require outdoor exposure when the glass curtain is open and while serving guests in the Sculpture Garden
  • Staff uniform is required at all times. See the Employee Manual and Café Operations Manual for additional dress and grooming requirements
Hours and Work Schedule

This is an hourly position requiring availability for weekend, day, evening, and holiday shifts. The Seasonal Café Services Associate position is nonexempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act and will receive overtime pay for all hours worked in excess of forty in a seven-day workweek or over twelve in a day.
