WINTER WORKSHOPS

Aspen Art Museum’s workshops are designed for children ages four to fourteen. Under the guidance of professional artists and educators, children learn about current themes in contemporary art, develop their artistic skills, and expand their understanding of contemporary art through fun, hands-on projects, performances, group discussions, and off-site excursions.

 

Pricing:

Members $50.00/day or $150.00/week

(nonmembers $75.00/day or $250.00/week)

 

Maximum enrollment for all workshops is twelve.

FOR AGES 4–6

Instructor: Genna Collins

Genna Collins has a great passion for the visual arts and an undeniable enthusiasm when it comes to working with children. Genna graduated with a Bachelor’s of Arts and Sciences degree from the University of Washington, Seattle, with a dual major in Interdisciplinary Studio Art and Art History and is now receiving her Master’s from the University of Denver in Arts Development and Program Management. Traditionally trained in intaglio, she now practices work in mixed media–painting, printing, drawing, and decollage. Genna has worked with children for over 10 years and is currently the Youth Programs Manager at the Aspen Art Museum.

 

WINTER WAYS AND SNOWY DAYS

Celebrate this holiday season—and create great gifts for family and friends—by creating winter-themed works of art based on the methods and materials of contemporary artists. Participants explore landscapes, portraits, and abstraction while working with a variety of media, including drawing, painting, collage, and sculpture.

 

MACRO, MICRO, MULTIMEDIA

12/27 – 12/30, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Red Brick Center for the Arts, 110 East Hallam Street

Create mixed-media works of art that are large and small, fat and flat in this workshop inspired by contemporary artist HumaBhabha. Participants will complete daily drawing exercises and, like HumaBhabha herself, create two- and three-dimensional works of art that mix and mash drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, and sculpture.

 

 

FOR AGES 7–13

Instructor: Annie Henninger

Annie Henninger is a licensed K12 Art Educator and Fine Artist committed to developing innovative workshops and programs for diverse audiences that support personal and social change through the lens of Contemporary Art.  Before moving to Aspen, Annie was an Outdoor/Art instructor at the Telluride Academy and taught children's workshops at the Anderson Ranch.  Most recently, she was the Fine Art teacher at Alpine Elementary, an International Baccalaureate World School near Boulder, CO and an avid volunteer at MCA Denver.  Annie holds a BA in Art History and Photography from Muhlenberg College and holds a second degree in Art Education and Painting from Colorado State University. She is currently the Education Outreach Coordinator at the Aspen Art Museum.

 

CONNECT FOUR

Ages 7–10

Connect four, you win! Explore the work of contemporary artist Huma Bhabha and create mixed-media works of art that connect drawing, painting, photography, and sculpture.  Participants will learn traditional methods of working within these four mediums, thenwith a twist, will combinethem to formexciting new works of art.

 

MITTEN MANIA

Ages 8–13

12/19 – 12/22, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Wondering what to do with last year’s socks and gloves? Do you have a mitten that has lost its match? Participants learn how to turn cast-off winter wear into works of art in this workshop inspired by contemporary artist Magda Sayeg, the founder of Knitta Please and the knit graffiti movement.

 

 

FAMILY WORKSHOPS

Family Workshops at the Aspen Art Museum encourage children and adult teams to look, share, and create together. Offered on select Sundays, families with children of all ages are welcome to drop in and explore the museum’s current exhibitions and participate in hands-on art projects. Each month families explore a different theme. Admission is free.

Create Your Own Lift Ticket

Sunday, February 19

1:30–3:30 p.m.

Take a creative ski break! Artists of all ages are invited to create their own lift ticket with Mark Grotjahn, artist of the seventh-annual AAM/Aspen Skiing Company limited-edition lift ticket. This year’s program will take place at the Snowmass Treehouse Kids’ Adventure Center.

ARTS IN THE SCHOOLS PROGRAM

In collaboration with Aspen Elementary School and Aspen Country Day School, the Aspen Art Museum offers Arts in the Schools, a program of six in-school art classes after school. Activities include drawing, collage, creative writing, illustration, sculpture, and painting. Each session includes a trip to the Aspen Art Museum for a guided tour of the exhibitions and an in-gallery art activity.

 

Aspen Elementary School

Grades: AES students K–4

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

AAM offers tuition assistance (based on financial need) to children and adults who live full time in the Roaring Fork Valley. Scholarships are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Applicants may apply for one scholarship per year. Please contact the Education Department for an application.
