Sound art has a long lineage that can traced from the Futurist manifestos of 1909–13, through the Fluxus, conceptual, and performance art movements of the 1960 and 70s, and up to the latest artistic uses of audio technology. With Hidden Noise explores sound art with a compilation of works by leading practitioners curated by Stephen Vitiello. Titled after a 1916 Marcel Duchamp ready-made—a ball of string that contains a mysterious sound-making object in its folds—this exhibition brings together a series of evocative sounds: some recognizable from traditional instruments and field recordings, and others altered through electronic processes. Visitors are invited to spend time listening with ears they may not know they had.
Situated within the Shigeru Ban Pavilion, this sound exhibition brings together historically significant art material with the methods of sound making and manipulation that have become central to the practices of many sound artists. Featuring a broad range of work, it seeks to provide an accessible way for audiences to experience alternative forms of sound composition.
Featured artists include legendary composer Pauline Oliveros, as well as Taylor Deupree, Jennie C. Jones, Andrea Parkins, Steve Peters, Steve Roden, Michael J. Schumacher, and Stephen Vitiello.
With Hidden Noise is part of ICI’s Exhibition in a Box series. Produced by Independent Curators International (ICI), New York, this exhibition is curated by Stephen Vitiello. With Hidden Noise is made possible, in part, by a grant from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts; the Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation; the Robert Sterling Clark Foundation; and the ICI Board of Trustees.
