Working in a variety of media, including sculpture, painting, and photography, German artist Friedrich Kunath creates work that explores themes heavily associated with
the legacy of German Romanticism. Melancholy, desire, vulnerability, hope, and
loneliness run throughout Kunath's work, which, although tinged with optimism, is often darkly humorous.
While Kunath's work is highly associative-frequently incorporating song titles, lyrics, and other elements of popular culture-it is constantly unpinned by a sense of the deeply personal and the utterly sincere. Playful shifts of scale and a poetic use of materials are employed by the artist to redouble a feeling of fragmented experience.
Kunath's exhibition at the Aspen Art Museum-his first one-person museum exhibition in the United States-will be accompanied by a fully-illustrated catalogue.
